Admiral Graf Spee - Scuttled herself to avoid action in the River Plate, after being defeated in action four days earlier by H.M.S. Ajax, Achilles and Exeter, December 17, 1939.

Lutzow - Torpedoed by British aircraft off the Norwegian coast on June 13, 1941, receiving extensive damage.

General Notes.- These are first ships of such size to have electrically welded hulls and to be propelled by Diesel engines. By these means a saving in weight of 550 tons is said to be effected. Are officially rated as " Armoured Ships" (Panzerschiffe), and popularly referred to as "Pocket Battleships". Actually, they are equivalent to armoured cruisers of an exceptionally powerful type.
Gunnery Notes.- The 11 inch guns are a new Krupp model, firing a 670 lb. Projectile, with a range of 30,000 yards and an elevation of 60°.
Machinery Note.- 8 sets compressorless double-acting two-stroke M.A.N. Diesels each of 6,750 B.H.P. at 450 r.p.m. Each group of four drives a single propelled shaft through Vulcan gear, which reduces speed to 250 r.p.m. Net weight of engines about 17.6 lb per b.h.p. excluding Vulcan drive, shafting, propeller and air reservoirs. Total weight of whole plant, about 48.5 lb. Per b.h.p. Electrically welded plate framing employed for the first time. It is started that Diesels have operated satisfactorily in service, without undue vibration or nise from exhaust; but unofficial reports suggest that they have not entirely answered expectations in these respects.
Note.- In 1937, 2 new cranes have replaced the former one; a small deckhouse has been added at base of catapult; derrick posts have been cut down and S.L. rearranged on a platorm around upper part of funnel. There is a pole mast on after director.
