General notes: laid down, August, 1909, by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg, under 1909 German Navy Programme, as a sister to German Moltke. Completed, July, 1912. Transfered to the Turkish Navy in 1914, and during the war was twice mined, striking 5 mines in all. A contract was signed in Dec. , 1926, with the Chantiers de St. Nazaire, for the repair and refit of this battle-cruiser at Ismid; the work was considerably delayed owing to a floating dock proving unequal to her weight, and completion, was not reached till 1930. She was again refitted in 1938. Mainmast was removed in 1941 to provide space for AA fire control.
